Einfache Kaminöfen sorgen im Herbst, Winter und Frühjahr für Wärme als Zusatz- oder Übergangsheizung. Ein moderner Kaminofen ist aber mehr als nur ein
Wärmelieferant und ästhetischer Blickfang . Er ist als alternative Wärmequelle heutzutage so konstruiert, dass durch eine optimale Luftzufuhr, die Verwendung neuer Materialien und eine verfeinerte Konstruktion das Holz emissionsarm verbrannt wird. Damit wird der Schadstoffausstoß stark verringert. Ersetzt so ein Kaminofen eine veraltete Feuerstätte, lassen sich Feinstaub und andere Schadstoffe um bis zu 85% reduzieren . Übrigens: Die Verbrennung von Holz produziert keine zusätzlichen Treibhausgase, da nur so viel Kohlendioxid freigesetzt wird, wie der Baum während seines Wachstums aufgenommen hat.
Stahl oder Gusseisen bilden die Standard-Ummantelung des Feuerraums, der zumeist aus Schamott bzw. Schamottsteinen besteht.

Ein Kaminofen mit Speicherstein kann mehr. Die Erweiterung der Brennräume mit einem Speicherstein sorgt für bedeutend länger anhaltende Wärme, auch noch nach Stunden. Das liegt an der bis zu 60 kg schweren zusätzlichen hochverdichteten Speichermasse, die als Speicherstein unsichtbar im Ofen untergebracht ist. So können Sie auch nach dem Erlöschen des Feuers noch länger von der nachstrahlenden Wärme profitieren.

Zu den Ausführungen:
Je nach Typ gibt es die Öfen auch mit verschiedenen Ummantelungen. Eine Ofenverkleidung kann aus Keramikkacheln oder Naturstein, z. B. Sand- oder Speckstein, bestehen. Eine Verkleidung aus Speckstein bringt unter den verschiedenen Materialien die höchste zusätzliche Speicherleistung.
